Pentecost Sunday

PENTECOST
• 50 (`pente') days after Passover    {7 weeks + 1 day}
• Feast of Weeks, or Shavuot in Hebrew.
• Commemorates the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, the beginning of the Israelite nation
• Celebrates the fruits of the harvest.

• God spoke the law at Mt. Sinai: The Ten Commandments.
       3,000 souls died due to disobedience.

• God sent the Holy Spirit upon the Jews who formed the Christian church.
       3,000 souls were saved.

Exodus 19 begins the telling of the Ten Commandments.
50 days after the people of Israel left Egypt, they came to the Desert of Sinai.  They camped there in the desert in front of the mountain while Moses went up unto God, where God gave Moses His laws.  Moses came down and called for the elders of the people, telling them the words which the Lord had commanded him.  All the people said, “All that the Lord hath spoken we will do.”

Exodus 20:1-17 tells how God wrote the Ten Commandments on the tablets of stone with His finger. But then God heard the Israelites partying & worshipping a false god and sent Moses back down. God was ready to destroy them all after the people had already said three times that they understood the laws and would obey them.

Exodus 32 tells about the golden calf. In verses 25-29 Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control.  So he stood at the entrance to the camp and said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me.” And all the Levites rallied to him.  That day about three thousand of the people died by the sword.

The day of Pentecost for Christians is the day on which the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles while Peter was preaching.  There were 120 believers assembled in the Upper Room in Jerusalem.  (Acts 1:15)

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.  And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.     (Acts 2:1-4).

6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
